Framed Mosaic Intarsia
18" x 24"

There once was two young chiefs on Kahuku Point of Hawaii who met Madame Pele, the goddess of volcanoes in the disguise of a beautiful princess, and their meeting blossomed into a romance. When the two young chiefs finally discovered that the beautiful princess was actually Pele, the goddess of fire, they ran in terror to the beach hoping to escape by her canoe. In a rage, Pele leaped from the hot lava she controlled and clutched the nearest chief in a searing embrace of fire, and in a moment she called forth more lava to consume her second sweetheart. When the area cooled, two lava forms, now known as the Hills of Pele, were all that remained.

Artist Analysis: There are no highly unusual pieces in this work. There are Venetian, Byzantine, mirror and porcelain tiles used, several colors of rock, pearls, abalone, buttons and a very wide assortment of different kind of beads. Like Quetzalcoatl, that shows the metamorphoses of man-into-skeleton...into-flame...into bird...into snake; this work of man-into-lava and woman-into-flame presented the same kind of problem as a difficult task in mosaic intarsia.
