Framed Mosaic Intarsia
18" x 24"

In the little fishing villages along the Japanese coast, this haunting legend is told.
On dark, rainy nights when the south wind blows, the phantom boat lurks off-shore sailing against the wind with its ghostly crew pleading for help from passing fishermen. The unwary fishermen who aid this apparition by lending sturdy, rather than bottomless bail buckets will seal their own doom, for the ghosts will attack with the full buckets swamping and sinking the fishing boat. As the helpless fishermen drown in the dark, cold waters of their own carelessness, the Funa Yurei will then sail away against the wind into the velvet blackness of the evil night in search of more victims.
Foo'-na-yoo-ray': A spirit found in Japanese Mythology. Funayūrei are the ghosts of people who have perished at sea.

Artist Analysis: This work is fairly conventional, being made of beads, rock, Venetian and Byzantine tile, urchin spine, abalone and buttons. The only unusual piece is a small turtle in the right corner that was a lapel pin donated by our daughter, Barbara.
