Framed Mosaic Intarsia
18" x 24"

The only son of King Minos of Crete was killed while on a dangerous expedition as the guest of Aegeus, King of Athens. Blaming Aegeus, Minos invaded Athens and declared he would destroy the city unless on every ninth year, the people sent him a tribute of seven youths and seven maidens. The first group was fed to a terrible Minotaur which was kept in a giant labyrinth. When time came for a second shipment, Theseus, the son of Aegeus, heroically volunteered to go as one of the victims. When the prisoners arrived in Crete, they were paraded through the streets. During the parade, Theseus was seen by Ariadne, the daughter of Minos. She fell in love at first sight and secretly had Theseus brought to her. Ariadne gave him a ball of string in exchange for his promise to take her to Athens when he escaped. Using the string to retrace his steps, Theseus ventured boldly into the Labyrinth. A furious hand-to-hand battle took place. The monster proved to be a ferocious fighter, but the nearly equal strength of Theseus combined with his heroic determination, he was finally able to defeat the awesome creature. Theseus then retraced his path to the entry by following the string. The others followed and taking Ariadne with them, they reached the ship and escaped to Athens.
Minotaur: A mythological monster with the head of a bull and body of a man.
Labyrinth: A maze-like structure made up of intricate chambers or passages designed so the person entering, would find it difficult to find a way out.

Artist Analysis: This was kept primarily to Venetian tile and looks more like a conventional mosaic because we wanted it to look "Grecian". However, we made some concessions with "our own look" by including a few beads, rock and shells.
