Framed Mosaic Intarsia
18" x 24"

In order to get water to the field for his people, King Ola enlisted the help of the tiny, powerfully built Menehune who live in the high forests. They agreed to help and in one night they came, each carrying a carefully quarried stone. They built the water course and after a great feast of shrimp, returned to the forest. Meh-nay-HOO-nay; small people

Artist Analysis: The Menehune are made from pebbles gathered at the black sand beaches in Hawaii at Wainapanapa, Hana and Maui, and are covered with beads purchased in Hollywood, California. The wall they are building is made from pebbles gathered on Orcas Island, Washington. The remainder, for the most part, is made of Venetian and Byzantine glass tile, assorted shells, pebbles and beads for variety. The large jewel which makes up the moon was purchased at a garage sale, and the "cat's-eye" spirit in the cliff on the right came from Arizona.
